There’s a lot of strategic shopping going on these days. But perhaps no shoppers are as strategic as those who play the Drugstore Game. You may, like me, belong to CVS’ ExtraCare program or Walgreens’ Register Rewards, through which you sometimes receive coupons on your receipts. Occasionally, you may even use one. But Drugstore Game players are [...] I don’t very often clip coupons, but I’m a dedicated user of the Publix “buy one, get one free” promotions. And nothing annoys me more than stocking up on something only to see it go BOGO the next week. Then I realized that BOGO promotions, and other supermarket discounts, run in cycles, with certain items going [...] I love the convenience of online shopping, but I hate paying a hefty fee for shipping, especially when buying an inexpensive item. Happily, a lot of companies are offering free shipping to win your holiday business. There’s even a new holiday: Free Shipping Day. Free Shipping Day this year is Thursday, the last day to order [...] Perhaps you thought Facebook was just for reuniting with your high school friends, and Twitter was for social-media mavens. But both online services can be a good source of deals and discounts from businesses large and small. Firms as varied as Sears and RA Sushi have Facebook pages on which they offer specials to their “fans” [...] Sometimes it seems parking at the Miami and Fort Lauderdale airports costs almost as much as flying out of them. Through trial and error, I’ve found a few moderately economical solutions. My Fort Lauderdale favorite used to be the airport’s extremely remote lot off Griffin Road, which was a 15-minute ride to the airport but only [...] Thinking about ordering pizza? Before you reach for the phone, go to the computer. You can often find a coupon. Of course, you can and should save the coupon inserts you get in the newspaper and via mail. When my extended family plans dinner, the organizers start by checking their paper coupon stash. Because I rarely order pizza [...] I recently needed an antibiotic eye ointment that costs $50 (with insurance). I searched the house for one of those pharmacy offers for a $25 gift card with a new prescription, and finally found one in a pile of papers. Expired. (Kmart had one in last Sunday’s newspaper — too late for me but perhaps [...] I like good coffee. And I like Starbucks. It has been a long time since I’ve had the extra cash to spend $3 on coffee every day, and since I drink it black, the steamed milk and fancy add-ins don’t tempt me. Instead, I make Starbucks coffee at home. My late partner and I tried various coffees [...] |
