As you read this, I am driving across the country with four cats. If you are considering this, my first piece of advice is: Don’t. But circumstances don’t always let us take the course we’d like. A road trip of four or five days, of course, is going to mean some expenses: motel rooms, meals, [...]  One of my Facebook friends recently became the envy of all her connections when she posted “Spending the night at a four-star beachfront hotel on Fort Lauderdale beach. $100 a night.” She had gone on Priceline, bid $100 on a four-star oceanfront hotel — and her bid had been accepted. She and her daughter [...] Like everyone else these days, I’m dreaming of being Julia Roberts and spending a year traveling around the world indulging my passions and eating, praying and loving. Wait a minute! I already did that, though I did not end up with Javier Bardem or spiritual enlightenment. The pasta and gelato were good.
